  17. What is ISDN ?

  20. ISDN  is  an evolution of the telephone network.  It provides digital
  21. transmission of voice, data, and image on  the  same  physical  line.
  22. The  ISDN  Basic  Rate  Interface  (BRI)  is  a line with 2 x 64 kb/s
  23. digital  channels  ,   named   B   (Bearer)   channels,   which   can
  24. simultaneously   transmit   voice,   user   data   or   images  in  a
  25. circuit-switching mode.

  27. ISDN circuit switching provides users with several advantages:
  28.  
  29. o  Cost-savings for datacommunication (pay for call duration, not for
  30.    volume), in particular for file transfer over wide area networks.
  31.  
  32. o  64 kb/s reliable data transmission over each ISDN B channel,
  33.  
  34. o  Fast dial-up call establishment,
  35.  
  36. o  Flexible  bandwidth  allocation  by opening one or several 64 kb/s
  37.    circuits,

  39. o  Access security, by identifying callers.

  47. The  HP  ISDN Link/S700 product for the HP 9000 Series 700 provides a
  48. network connection on the HP 9000 S700  to  public  or  private  ISDN
  49. networks.

  51. This product allows HP S700-to-HP S700, as well as HP S700 to HP ISDN
  52. Server (P/N J2101A), communications over ISDN networks,  through  the
  53. use  of  the  de facto standard TCP/IP.  The HP 9000 S700 workstation
  54. connected to the ISDN network can communicate with any HP  or  non-HP
  55. system which implements the TCP/IP protocol and is connected to a LAN
  56. equipped with an HP ISDN Server.

  58. Also,  when ordered with the option 099, the HP 9000 S700 workstation
  59. equipped with an ISDN Link can act as a non-dedicated IP  router  for
  60. the other HP or non-HP stations attached to the LAN.

  67. 1. Minimum communication costs
  68.  
  69. ISDN  tarification is based on the telephone tariffs system. The cost
  70. is related to the duration of the call rather than the volume of data
  71. transfered.   This  enables  the  HP 9000 S700 workstations, equipped
  72. with the HP ISDN Link/S700, to cost-effectively transfer  information
  73. to  remote,  distributed  sites.  In addition, built-in features like
  74. programmable inactivity timers and multiplexing of multiple  sessions
  75. over  the  same  B channel allow the user to effectively minimize the
  76. communication costs.

  78. 2. Transparency for the end-user
  79.  
  80. Because the ISDN Link/S700 is based on the TCP/IP standard, any HP-UX
  81. application running on top of  TCP/IP  can  transfer  information  to
  82. remote workstations or computers over ISDN, transparently.  ISDN call
  83. set-up and call clearing are also entirely  automated  based  on  the
  84. contents of the configuration files.

  86. 3. Flexible bandwith allocation

  88. One  or  two  64  kbps  B channels can be allocated for a single ISDN
  89. communication between two HP 9000 S700 workstations or between one HP
  90. 9000  S700  workstation  and  one  HP ISDN Server. File transfers can
  91. therefore be performed at up to 128 kb/s.

  94. 4. Network security

  96. A  list  of authorized ISDN callers can be configured for the HP 9000
  97. S700 workstation and calls from unauthorized callers are refused.

  99. 5. Centralized management through HP OpenView Node Manager

  101. The  HP ISDN Link/S700 can be configured and controlled from a remote
  102. HP OpenView Node Manager  station.   It  supports  the  SNMP  network
  103. management protocol.

  106. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

  109. The  HP  ISDN  Link/S700  includes  all  the  necessary  hardware and
  110. software to connect an HP S700 workstation to the ISDN and run TCP/IP
  111. based  networking  software  such as ARPA Services, Berkeley Sockets,
  112. LAN Manager or HP's  Network  Services.   These  networking  software
  113. products are not part of the HP ISDN Link/S700 product and are either
  114. provided  with  the  HP  S700  workstation  or  must   be   purchased
  115. separately.

  117. The  hardware  includes  an  ISA/EISA compatible Basic Rate Interface
  118. card with its ISDN cable (RJ45 connectors) to connect to  the  public
  119. or private ISDN line.  Software is provided on CD-ROM or DAT.

  121. A  specific  software  option  must be purchased to allow the HP ISDN
  122. Link/S700 to act as a local, non-dedicated, IP router/gateway for the
  123. workstations and computers connected to the LAN.

  125. The  HP  ISDN  Link/S700  is fully compatible with the HP ISDN Server
  126. (J2101A). When multiple, distributed HP9000 S700 workstations need to
  127. access  a central site over an ISDN network, it is recommended to use
  128. the HP ISDN Server to act as  a  call  concentrator  for  the  remote
  129. stations  to  access the computers on the central site LAN.  For more

  131. please contact your local HP representative.

  138. extension of  the  existing  certications  obtained  for  the  J2100A
  139. product reference.
